Former Memphis and Austin Peay football player Nigel Brannon was shot and killed at an apartment complex, Oklahoma City police announced Tuesday.

Police responded to a shooting Monday and found a 21-year-old man dead at the scene. The victim was later identified as Brannon.

According to multiple reports, investigators said Brannon was inside a vehicle and "believed to be involved in some sort of illegal activity" that resulted in gunfire.

Paris Tolver, 22, was arrested on a complaint of first-degree murder but police said it remains an open and ongoing investigation.

Brannon was one of Memphis' highest-rated recruits in its 2018 recruiting class out of John Marshall in Oklahoma City. A three-star offensive lineman who later moved to defense, Brannon appeared in 23 games in two seasons before entering the transfer portal last December.

He transferred to Austin Peay but in July, Brannon was suspended from the team after being arrested and charged with aggravated assault and aggravated kidnapping. According to the affidavit, Brannon was accused of holding a teammate against his will and threatening him with a knife.

When the teammate tried to leave the apartment, the two struggled and the teammate was cut on the neck and wrist.

Former Memphis players, including, O'Bryan Goodson, Kenneth Gainwell and Roger Joseph, took to Twitter to express their condolences.

"Rest Well My brother. Gone wayyy too soon!! Watch Over Us Big Fella," Goodson said.
